'Is Jesus God?'
For two millennia humanity has been arguing this very point, and understandably why - the answer determines eternal hope. Follow along in these (non-exhaustive) scriptures, and let's see how the Bible foretold of Christ's identity.
[Matthew 1:23 KJV] "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
Was this announced before His coming?
[Isaiah 7:14 NASB95] "“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.”
How does God describe Himself?
[Isaiah 44:6 NASB95] "“Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: ‘I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me.”
How does Jesus describe Himself?
[Revelation 22:13 NASB95] "“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.””
Was Christ’s identify as the preexisting one mentioned elsewhere?
[Micah 5:2 NASB95] "“But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.””
[Isaiah 9:6 NASB95] "For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.”
Can God's glory be shared with anyone else?
[Isaiah 48:11 NASB95] "“For My own sake, for My own sake, I will act; For how can My name be profaned? And My glory I will not give to another.”
[John 17:5 NASB95] "“Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”
Why did the religious leaders want to kill Him?
[John 10:30-33 NASB95] "“I and the Father are one.” The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.””
How did God reveal Himself to Moses?
[Exodus 3:14 NASB95] "God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’””
How did Jesus reveal Himself?
[John 8:56-58 NASB95] "“Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.””
After His resurrection, how did Thomas respond to His appearance?
[John 20:26-29 NASB95] "After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.””
While Jesus is God, He was appointed a specific mission as Son of Man. What was that?
[Hebrews 1:1-4 NASB95] "God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.”
[Isaiah 42:5-9 NASB95] "Thus says God the LORD, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread out the earth and its offspring, Who gives breath to the people on it And spirit to those who walk in it, “I am the LORD, I have called You in righteousness, I will also hold You by the hand and watch over You, And I will appoint You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the nations, To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the dungeon And those who dwell in darkness from the prison. “I am the LORD, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, Nor My praise to graven images. “Behold, the former things have come to pass, Now I declare new things; Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.””
As mentioned above, this is by no means an exhaustive study detailing all the proofs of Jesus' divinity. The reason the Christian can have assurance of justification is that by faith in Jesus Christ, they are reckoned according to the very righteousness of God - vicariously through Jesus their Mediator.
